Even bread was rationed and often ran out before the people at the end of the long line were able to get any. This was total war and David has never forgotten the horror of it, even though he was very young.

When David first visited Jerusalem in 1963 he traveled overland from Beirut through Damascus, Syria and Amman, Jordan to what was then the Jordanian part of Jerusalem. This is the area now known as East Jerusalem.  Since that time David has visited Israel more than sixty times and traveled in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Pakistan, Iran, and many other countries with Muslim majorities. He has many friends among the Muslim and Christian communities in some of these areas and has never missed the opportunity to talk with them about the politics and religion of the various countries.   

His knowledge of Islam has been gained, not in a University, but in the homes of the people involved day and night in the religion. This knowledge is passed on, not in the academic terms of a professor, but in the simple language of every day speech, which the majority of readers will more readily understand.
